THE PRINCIPAL'S NEW CLOTHES by Stephanie Calmenson

In an updating of Andersen's tale about a vain emperor, it's Mr. Bundy, the principal, who is ""the sharpest dresser in town."" When two able tricksters promise him a suit with special powers, he promptly succumbs to the bait. Since the assistant principal and the smartest kid in school both vouch for the new suit's existence, Mr. Bundy goes through the motions of donning it and proceeds to school despite a restless night of ""cold and drafty dreams."" It takes a kindergartner to point out that he's come to assembly in his underwear; in a clever conclusion, the children loan Mr. Bundy enough spare garments to compile the oddest suit he's ever worn. Brunkus' lively, bright illustrations have just the right comic touch. The whole school should chortle with glee over this one!
