Hayden is starting her sophomore year of college, determined to pledge to service sorority Beta Gamma Pi. In spite of her play-by-the-rules attitude, she reluctantly participates in a series of sorority-sponsored hazing events, which end when one girl nearly dies in a cruel assault. After many members are expelled, Hayden becomes president of the chapter and is forced to deal with numerous moral and ethical issues, including an uncertain relationship with campus hunk Creed. Hayden relies on her strong Christian faith and frequent prayer to guide her though the conflict. The first-person narration and nearly all dialogue are presented in a modified urban street vernacular. Overlong and occasionally disjointed, the narrative is notable for flat, hackneyed characterization and a predictable plot. The ending sets up further books in the planned series. A series of thoughtful questions are included to guide group discussions. Purchase where African-American chick-lit is popular. (Fiction. 12 & up)
