Barnyard animals peacefully slumber.

A little farm pup pokes around the farmyard as the sheep, mice, ducklings, and other animals prepare for bed. A nightingale sings a sweet lullaby as the pup explores. The book employs a simple abcb rhyme scheme to lull little readers into somnolence, using soft language and a reassuring tone. The illustrations are composed with deep, warm colors and painterly affectations to draw readers in and keep them focused. Although this board book seems tailor-made for bedtime reading, it should not be used as a grand finale. The text curiously uses “Good morning to you!” as its last sentence (referencing the rooster’s morning call), putting an oddly wakeful aftertaste in readers’ minds.

A serviceable bedtime story that will help calm little ones down after a long day.
