SNOW ON BLUEBERRY MOUNTAIN

Blueberry Mountain in the Poconos- 20 years later- finds young Mark Wilkins putting his shoulder to the wheel to maintain the family property. Between high school studies and triumphs in basketball and football he manages a full program: 1) to put the blueberry picking business into more profitable channels; 2) to build a ski lodge and shape an admirable slope; 3) to track down the local deer poacher and thief; and 4) to operate his ski run at a profit. Salutatorian at graduation, with a more than creditable accumulation of A's and B's -- and with the funds secured largely through his own efforts, he was then on to college. And by Thanksgiving he had fitted in and was on the way to becoming the most popular boy in his class. We don't want to mar the pattern of an American success story- but wasn't Mark just a bit too right and too lucky (even granting the hard work, and his mother's sterling worth)? Once again Meader is at his best in the convincing regional flavor- but this isn't Meader in his traditional credible characterizations.
