BOY WITH A PACK by Stephen W. Meader

BOY WITH A PACK

Bill Crawford started from New Hampshire with a pack of trinkets to trade for food and money on his trek to Ohio. Before he arrived he had acquired a dog, a mare, her colt, and a pretty black-eyed girl. His adventures on an Erie Canal barge, with horse thieves and runaway slaves are in the old tradition. The plot is too crammed with incident to leave space for character development.
