Dave March (sixteen) and his family are bound for Oregon from Missouri with a wagon train. They pick up Jeff Barlow, the artist and scout of Buffalo and Beaver (1960), and he becomes the unofficial hunter-guide. Nothing hair-raising happens on the long haul: just hunting, trading, fording rivers, climbing mountains, dealing with Indians, making and breaking camp. All the plot is in the story of survival, but with the technical details that's exciting enough. For the reader more interested in how than wow, good reading with 'em all the way.
