Sixteen-year-old Jeff Barlow joins his father on a tracking and hunting mission in the Rockies. Imbued with a love of the wilderness he lives the life of a scout and hunter, enduring all the hardships, enjoying all the adventure of that rugged life. And throughout his trek he looks about him with an artist's eye, putting down what he sees on canvas. Jeff's dream to become an artist is fulfilled as he heads toward St. Louis, the new cultural metropolis of the west where he will study the techniques of painting in order to prepare himself as the graphic portrayer of the frontier. A vigorous pioneer story with an interesting twist, a story which dispels the unspoken notion that artists are somewhat effete, and which recognizes those talented men, who did in fact, create a school of frontier painting.
