A Spooky Hologram Book

A slight, trite tale about a trio of spooks—``Headless Hector, the Gray Lady, and I, the Silver Skeleton''—provides a vehicle for some intriguingly effective holograms. The ghosts do their job at Ravenswick castle too well: after 400 years, its live inhabitants flee, leaving them out of a job. After wandering a bit, they settle in an amusement park, thus retrieving the fortunes of a ``Ghost Train.'' Lee's double-spread illustrations are skillfully done—authentic details of costume and architecture, humorously broad characterizations, slightly garish colors—but the real attraction here is six evanescent insets (plus three on the cover) that can be made to move and change color and are quite satisfyingly eerie. A curiosity, guaranteed to grab attention. (Picture book. 5-9)
