PALMETTO COUNTRY by Stetson Kennedy

One of the best in a good series, American Folkways, another informal and indigenous interpretation of a region -- this time Florida, to make good general reading as well as colorful local reporting. The country, swamps and glades, sunshine and hurricane; the people-crackers and Negroes, Cubans and resorters; its history, briefly, down through the slave days and the rough, ruthless reconstruction and the KKK. Folk tales and folk lore, black magic and voodoo, jook joints and prostitution, and lastly the livelihood of the country in cattle, hogs, turpentine, fish and cigars. A manysided portrait, which is both informative and entertaining.
