LETTER TO A CONSERVATIVE

He has seen service as a headliner for SANE and America was surprised to see one of its favorite late-night television personalities talking politics and nuclear disarmament when they thought he only handed out gifts to the audience. It hurt him to see all those bombs going off. It hurt him, too, to see so many people join the John Birch society and act so irrationally when they should be logical, Just nice piano-playing or house-party going Joes. So he wrote these epistles to a conservative correspondent, interpreting American liberalism, American conservatism, scolding the Birchers, hoping that those who aren't stark raving mad will listen to his lecture and give up their anti-semitic friends, and keep to a sane, anti-liberal, anti-communist crowd. He's against the Commies just as well as the next fellow is, anyway. Playing the piano. Handing out leaflets against the bomb boys. Why, Stalin and Welch and old etcetera, he read a few books to give out with these homey letters. The books he read are listed at the back of this one and all the rest of us folks ought to read them first and let Steve Allen go back to handing out real, instead of intellectual, salami.
