Alien-contact curtain-raiser developed from a comic book series. Millions of years ago the Paxus Majae rescued a number of species from Earth before the Cretaceous/Tertiary extinctions; of these, Avitaurs--descended from pterosaurs, those furry, flying non-dinosaurs of the Mesozoic--have retained their wings while somehow acquiring arms and a humanoid aspect. Avitaur Zeerus, a rebel against the Majae, has fled into space in search of allies against his former masters. But when he arrives in our solar system, he naturally tells his new Earth friends nothing of all this. Zeerus's first contacts are with computer whiz Stewart Davies and his girlfriend Jess Rossini, though soon General Larry Hightower of the Joint Chiefs steps in to manage communications and keep a lid on things; the general's secret lover is the President's Chief of Staff, Laurie Sherman. A subplot involves 11-year-old hacker Jake Holcroft and his fanatical survivalist father's backwoods militia. More like space-politician-contact than alien-contact: creaky and forgettable, all puff and no substance.
