Out Of Season ($23.95; Oct. 1; 304 pp.; 0-312-24414-2) The bad news in this seventh dispatch from Posadas County, New Mexico, is that aging, ailing Undersheriff Bill Gastner (Prolonged Exposure, 1998, etc.) is losing his indispensable deputy, Estelle Reyes-Guzman, to her husband’s job in far-off Minnesota. The good news is that he’s losing his uninspiring boss, Sheriff Martin Holman, to a timely homicide.
