Holbrook is the author, among other books, of Holy Old Mackinaw, a ripsnorting story of the lumber industry, which older boys have taken in their stride. Now, using the same dramatic and picturesque material and presenting it with some of the toughness removed, he has told the story of lumbering for younger readers. There is plenty of punch still to be found, as the history, the story, the adventure, the romance unfold. There is something too of the social problems involved, as the labor troubles are revealed. One questions wide interest in chapters on terminology, etc. but on the whole the book is an excellent factual record of an important American industry.
