Not wholly tough -- more raised elbow than sex but with less barroom language than this would imply -- this is told by a private dick on a case first involving smuggled jewelry and jewel thefts at a de luxe hotel-club in Seattle. Unanticipated is a tie-up with a gambling boat, his girl friend who is working a double cross, murders, and the detective's own stupidity in getting rid of one of the bodies. A photo-finish, just ahead of the professional investigator, in which integrity beats out romance. Plenty gore, questionable ethics, but sustained in interest and action.
