MAGGIE AND THE GOODBYE GIFT

Maggie's parents and brother are sad about leaving their friends for strangers when her dad is transferred, but Maggie hopes that mother's friend's goodbye gift will cheer them up. So, when everyting is put away in the new house, she opens the gift--an electric can opener--and with it proceeds to open every can in the kitchen. ""Wow, Maggie,"" says brother Jack. ""You've got enough stuff there to feed supper to everybody on both sides of the street."" And that of course is what they do, thereby turning all the strangers into friends. The Milords' childlike black-and-white drawings (only Maggie is filled in with color) match the very young child's first-person telling, and other displaced tots will recognize her view of moving day.
