“Tomato seeds, / tomato seeds, / how do / you grow?” On the opposite page a sprinkling of tomato seeds hovers on a white field; a bright orange arrow encourages readers to open the vertical gatefold, revealing a cross-section of a young tomato plant growing out of the ground. Opening the horizontal gatefold reveals a 13.5” X 15” photo of a little boy holding a ripe tomato. The pattern repeats with blueberries, peppers, peas and oranges, each held by a different child, culminating in a spread of all the children and the concluding phrase, “We love seeds and their delicious fruits!” This botanically correct statement may baffle many children (and their parents), but they’re likely to be so wowed they won’t care. The engineering necessarily makes this a little on the flimsy side, but it’s still pretty snazzy. (Board book. 1-4)
