When her divorced Hollywood mother marries a Long Island man, 16-year-old Lynn decides to retire from acting and live the normal American life she has been simulating for four years on TV's Kampbell Kids. At 17, Lynn's new stepbrother Peter hasn't a ""normal"" life either-he's hemophiliac and can't attend school--so he takes on the role of advisor, helping Lynn pass for one of the gang and vicariously sharing her success. The two disagree at times about tactics--despite his opposition, she befriends one outsider and in so doing brings the girl into the gang--and Peter's not at all happy when Lynn starts dating popular classpresident Andy. Then Lynn gets an acting offer she can't refuse and both boys are resentful--but it's clear that her relationship with Peter will last in one way or another, and that Andy and the typical teenage life are not for her. Mostly for girls who share Lynn's classmates' curiosity about a teenage ""star,"" though Pfeffer usually manages to keep the kids' conversations a step ahead of the soapopera situations.
