Money has always been tight for Reggie’s family, but when her father dies, things deteriorate even further. Her mother’s answer to their financial worries is to allow Reggie to pay for most everything while she blows what little money they have on expensive jewelry purchases and eBay auctions. Reggie’s hope of escaping dissolves when she is passed over for a promotion at work—but it is hard to be angry at her replacement when he is so cute. When her mother announces that they have won the lottery, Reggie thinks all their troubles are behind them—but then why is her mother being so secretive about everything? What’s a girl who’s suddenly loaded with dough to do? Reggie’s passivity and lack of growth for much of the novel will frustrate readers. When she finally decides to be proactive, it is too little, too late. A predictable plot and overshadowing secondary characters further dilute the untapped potential of Reggie’s story. (Fiction. 14 & up)
