One of the many Native American creation myths featuring Raven. Here, he creates the Earth and animals, including man, then leaves them in the clark while he ascends through a rip in the sky to another land where he is reborn as a human; ever the trickster, he steals the round basket that holds the Day and escapes with it back to his world. The retelling here is fairly long, but the many lively incidents and brisk, informal dialogue keep it moving. Robert Shetterly's vigorous paintings, most of them dominated by the midnight blue of the lightless world, are enriched with Indian masks and motifs; appropriately, they reflect the text's good humor and breezy style. An attractive, accessible addition to folklore collections.
