THE SUMMERTIME SOLDIERS

Cambridge, Mass., is again the locale (The Gemini Man), in Kelly's second outing, and writer-sleuth Hz Conners is still in love with police detective Jack Lingemann. Jack's major problem is the resurgence of a small campus-born terrorist group calling itself People's Revolutionary Cadre, headed by ruthless blue-blood Sarah Olmsbacher and responsible for several killings in the 60's. Their target now is mid-level defense-arms-nuclear workers, two of whom have so far been shot down--and there's no end in sight. While Jack explores all the usual channels to track members of the gang, Liz tries to help with speculation, some rather aimless research and interviews with Sarah's old contacts. She gets more than she's bargained for, though, when Sarah, in a surprise twist, turns up at the apartment of Liz's friend Abby Henderson, to provide a tense finale. Lots of sitting-around talk and a plethora of detail about food and drink don't help a sometimes draggy pace. Competent but uncompelling.
