NIGHT-TIME NUMBERS

A SCARY COUNTING BOOK

Night-Time Numbers (32 pp.; $15.95; Aug.; 1-84148-001-0) What creepy-crawlies lurk in the dark? As a mother and child move through the familiar routine of getting ready for bed, she asks, “who can you see?” and listens carefully to the child’s responses, which include monsters, dragons, witches, wolves, ghosts, and ghouls. Vibrant collage illustrations in a wide variety of textures complement the short rhyming text, and culminate in a golden yellow scene showing an angel watching over the sleeping child, who, having named her fears, can now sleep soundly. THE DING DONG CLOCK

Between midnight and noon a family sleeps, wakes, then leaves the house to the pets and a pair of enterprising mice, while a grandfather clock sounds hourly “dings” and “dongs.” Children can practice an increasingly old-fashioned skill by manipulating clock hands on the cover as they listen to Behrman’s rhymed text and view Takahashi’s spacious, twisty domestic scenes. It’s an adequate second choice, after Dan Harper’s Telling Time with Big Mama Cat (1998); that book has a less generic story line, and is designed so that the clock face folds out. A IS FOR AMOS

Soft colors and small, rounded figures in Narahashi’s paintings add extra appeal to this alphabetic horsey ride. Leaping atop her rocking horse, Amos, a young daydreamer crosses a “bumpity bridge” with a “clippety clop,” gallops through fields, up and down a hill, and back to the “extra dry” barn as sunny skies give way to rain clouds. The partly rhymed text, with featured uppercase and lowercase letters in boldface, creates an evocative rhythm to underscore the playful pretend outing. (Picture book. 4-6)
