This lively and well researched account of the ""Great Little Madison's"" eppery political career and reserved social life is carefully organized and well paced. The dialogue is not forced; Madison, unlike so many of his fellow historical figures, does not mumble and mutter his deep thoughts aloud to himself; the co-authors have found subtler, more realistic devices for conveying the man's political position. The slight-of-build, sharp -minded little giant is an interesting character who deserved the lively handling he is given here. The hustling, exuberant society of Philadelphia, and then Washington, constitutes the gaily colored tapestry against which Madison is portrayed. Sound fact-- sound writing.
