KIRKUS REVIEW

A stolid, primer-like adaptation of the well-known Grimm tale about a simpleton whose act of kindness to a little gray man earns him the magical support that wins him a princess. The illustrations are bright and cheerful but undistinguished, and not improved by the visually unmotivated depiction of some of the figures as silhouettes. Acceptable as a reader, but for other purposes hang onto your Leslie Brooke or find the story in a fairy-tale collection.
