Readers with a low tolerance for cliches and five-dollar adjectives like heroic, gallant and tragic may never get beyond the first chapter in which Mrs. Penny Tweedy rescues the Meadow Stables (""a ship without a rudder"" after the illness of her father) and brings forth Riva Ridge and Secretariat. Yet it can't be denied that Wilding has lots to say about the ins and outs of American thoroughbred breeding--this covers the big stables and the personalities of notable owners and trainers as much as the careers of Triple Crown winners. Garrulous.
