SURVIVING HIGH SCHOOL

Help and Advice for Launching into Life

by Suzanne Lahl

Pub Date: July 13th, 2014
Publisher: Tuxedo Publishing

A thoughtful reference guide for high school students on the verge of adulthood.

As a longtime teacher and mentor, Lahl (Chemistry for Everyone, 2010) offers a wealth of knowledge for teens facing decisions that will determine their futures. She divides her advice into sections on school, careers, social life, mental and physical health, and money management. She offers personal anecdotes for each, providing examples to help readers gain perspective on especially troubling adolescent matters, such as fitting in, whether to attend college and learning how to get proper nutrition. Lahl promotes seeking the help of adults and asking as many questions as possible; remaining silent and confused in class, she says, has never helped anyone. Keeping an open mind is an important tenet of the author’s instruction, particularly regarding potential schools and careers. Brainstorming, conducting thorough research and then trying things out, she says, can prevent future disillusionment, whether one is visiting a school or volunteering with an organization. The author also stresses the importance of being yourself, recognizing your strengths and not being afraid to fail: “Failure can be your friend,” she states, in that it can allow greater learning opportunities. The book’s final sections present an overview of introductory money management and provide practical, easy-to-digest information for anyone starting out in the work world. Rather than providing in-depth guidance on one particular subject, Lahl offers a broader take on navigating the major trials of adolescence. Because it’s a short read, the main points jump out quickly: Don’t be afraid to ask questions, be yourself, take your future seriously, and find what makes you happy. Although the text lacks humor, it has a great deal of sincerity. Overall, readers intimidated by long-winded guides will find solace in Lahl’s concise advice.

A quick, highly accessible guide for teenagers seeking comfort and practical assistance.
