Mabel is an ambitious kitten. On her Virginia farm she dreams of something more, and her mother encourages her to live her dreams. But then her mother dies in a car accident, and Mabel is left in the care of the dashing barn cat, Silas—until Peaches Gilbert arrives to buy beautiful Spring Hill Farm, and Mabel sees her chance to achieve greatness. She invites Peaches to come live on her farm and then moves back to New York City with her, where together they open a store called ``Mabel's'' on posh Madison Avenue. Coil (Mardi Gras!, p. 64, etc.) tells this charming story well. Mayfield has captured the famous feline in her quiet cat's-eye view pictures. Country cat makes good. Especially fun for those who have visited her eponymous store. (Fiction/Picture book. 9- 12)
