WHERE ARE YOU WHEN I NEED YOU?

Head and heart collide as Missy Cord approaches the end of her senior year, expecting to go on to college but then suddenly falling in love with lifelong friend Jim. Should she leave the secure familiarity of her small North Carolina town for the vague promise of a better life, or stay where she has a beau, a place, and a predictable future? Newton makes the dilemma both real and complex, with well-drawn characters and believable circumstances pushing Missy in both directions and with the potential consequences of either decision clearly laid out. With friends and older adults on both sides, Missy works through her confusion against a background of dating games and other subplots, at last deciding to go--though perhaps not forever, since in the end she realizes that she wants to be a teacher and may well return. Once again, Newton (I Will Call It Georgie's Blues, 1983) conveys unexaggerated feelings with rare skill and sympathy, leaving formula romances in the dust.
