A CONQUEST OF TIBET

There seems to be no limit to the chances this intrepid explorer will take in search of adventure in strange places. It extended over more than ten long years, this unconquerable urge to penetrate the secrets of forbidden Tibet. In 1896, on the very threshold of success, after braving storms and hardships and attacks by alien people, he was turned back, with the stern admonition not to attempt it again. In 1906, he came back, and, resorting to disguises, finally entered the Buddhist Holy City, Lhasa. Good adventure -- good travel material -- very personal -- and written with the same casual sort of vigor that characterized the earlier books. The delightful pen sketches which illustrate this volume are a tremendous addition.
