This is Volume I of a new translation of the Upanishads made by the leader of the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York. The Upanishads contain the essence of the Vedas, the Scriptures of the Hindu faith. This new translation from the Sanskrit contains an introduction in which there is given a general outline of the metaphysics and psychology of Hinduism. The text itself is interspersed with notes giving comments and explanations which are based upon the interpretations of Sankaracharya, the great eighth-century philosopher and mystic of India. It is a volume which will be of especial interest to students of comparative religion and to those interested in Hinduism.
