KIRKUS REVIEW

This first in the King Gesar series introduces the Tibetan King of Ling, the legendary hero of ancient Tibet. It is prophesied that the infant Gesar one day will be king, but evil lords rule the land, and first must be overthrown. When Gesar grows up, an elaborate race is planned; with the help of his future wife Brougmo and a mythical horse Kyanshay, Gesar defeats all challengers. Exotic illustrations of characters in bright array accompany this clear retelling of the Tibetan national epic. The story incorporates messages of peace, harmony and so-called enlightened behavior, offering a privileged look into another culture's values. Good storytelling; unusual fare.
