A slight tale of a step-father, a new baby, and a mother and grandmother who take it on the chin for a long, long time. For Susan's new father is a violinist, and Mama dreams of a concert career for him, towards which end they move to New York, live in hovels, and never quite make the grade. Young Susan lies about her life, never descends to ""Daddy"", and makes her way with all the new friends she is forced to meet. When a patroness appears and absorbs Mr. Dick too thoroughly, Mama walks out - but Mr. Dick wins her back again. Nothing distinguished in this mild-mannered family story.
