The author and her husband, with the completion of a water-diversion tunnel, decide to stay on at Florence Lake in the Sierras and this is the story of their year round life there, particularly in the winter, when, isolated from the world, birds and animals create diversion, friendship, interest and philosophy. The observation and appreciation of wild life approaches the Gustav Eckstein Canary type of book, for the birds and animals come alive as distinct personalities and problems. How they divided their supplies for the birds, then redivided them for the animals, and pinch still further for the coyotes who provided them with their most fascinating studies, never tamed, but never enemies. Plus the outdoor, nature appeal, there is the interest in the type of solitary winter existence, the living outside civilized and citified comforts. Rewarding reading.
