...is the story of John McLoughlin and the settling of the Oregon territory. McLoughlin becomes a Chief Factor for the Hudson Bay Company when it merges with the North West Company. At the negotiations in London, McLoughlin meets George Simpson and the reader knows that trusting this man will be the biggest mistake McLoughlin makes. It eventually costs him his son, his son-in-law, and his Job. Simpson wants only to be knighted by Queen Victoria; McLoughlin wants to see the land he loves developed by people living in peace and freedom. The book ends with a ceremony celebrating the boundary treaty and the raising of the stars and stripes in McLoughlin's yard. Hopefully, the childish title will not deter too many readers from an absorbing story.
