A very simple description of the animals that might be seen during an elephant-back trip through one of India's National Parks: wild dogs, langur monkeys, barasingha deer, and--most dramatically--a tiger hunting and catching a chital fawn to feed her young (an incident recorded briefly but realistically, without sentimentality or gore). Lewin's watercolor double-spreads are outstanding, evoking the shadowy jungle with its ruins of a maharajah's palace and portraying the beasts in their habitat with a graceful precision and sympathy that recall the fine work of Joyce Powzyk.
