RUNNING SCARRED

The scarred in the title describes the heart of Sports Illustrated writer Maule who had a massive coronary and went into heart failure five years ago. That five is a milestone survival figure for this disease as well as cancer. Maule retraces the episode and the slow recovery with a little eccentric rehabilitation (cell injections at Dr. Niehans' Swiss spa). He never managed to altogether stop drinking or smoking. But then he began to jog -- via Aerobics -- and in a year worked up to three miles a day and worked off 40 pounds and seven inches at the waist. He's still jogging (even though it was counterindicated a little while back) and his story has that personal first-person touch -- he's very easy to keep up with.
