A love story that is based on an episode in an early history has for its setting the late years of the 11th century in which the 1st Crusade climaxed its long, death tolled travels with the taking of Jerusalem. The lad , from Provence, is given refuge, after he has been set upon by a bandit, by the Baron of Mezieres and his recovery leads him to love the lady Anne. Discovered, he kills the Baron, joins the Peasant Army of Peter the Hermit and, when it is vanquished in the massacre near the Sea of Marmora, becomes a Crusader, to live through the siege of Antioch and the taking of Jerusalem. Fighting for his lady he loses an arm, makes his way back to her to find her firm that they must part forever and goes on the long pilgrimage to Ulm. Anne goes after him to prove her love, follows him to Venice, even to Jerusalem and, at Tyre, finds him a captive of the Moslems, blinded and dying. A time of faith confronted by chaos, ignorance and terror, of witchcraft and omens, of chivalry and violence, of high purpose and brutal actions -- this sees the period and the people through modern eyes and understanding while keeping the atmosphere. No Dorothy Charques this, but able in its execution.
