YOU CAN BEAT THE ODDS ON HEART ATTACK

Not much that you haven't heard already--a simple presentation of basics. Cholesterol and how to reduce your intake, the evil effects of sugar (in the bloodstream it turns into triglycerides--fatty substances that cause atherosclerosis), the dual effect of cigarette smoking (nicotine addiction and carbon monoxide poisoning), the danger of high blood pressure. Levitas makes some interesting points about the sympathetic nervous system: in the primal state it sparked hormonal response to occasional temporary emergencies like being chased by a tiger--but the body interprets the constant stress level of modern civilization as a continual emergency. Consequently our adrenal hormones are working overtime, with disastrous vascular effects. Levitas provides some general suggestions about diet and some more detailed suggestions about exercise, with charts giving specific levels of pulse rate at different stages of the regimen. Hardly everything you ever wanted to know, but moderately useful.
