TERRY CARR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY OF THE YEAR #16

The late, lamented Caws farewell ""best of"": 11 quality yarns, including a couple of standouts. The standouts, almost inevitably, are: Lucius Shepard's ""Aymara,"" another eerie, complex tale of politics and time travel set in the jungles of Central America; and John Varley's ""Tango Charlie and Foxtrot Romeo,"" a poignant and funny yam about a dog-loving, alcoholic gift trapped aboard a doomed space station. Elsewhere, Jimmy Carter meets an abominable snowman (Kim Stanley Robinson); a story from Orson Scott Card's new folk-magic series about Alvin Maker; double dealing aboard an orbiting habitat for refugees (Robert Silverberg); ""Galileo Complains"" (he's been resurrected and doesn't like what he sees, by Carter Scholz); a feral child variant (Judith Moffett); a cyberpunk entry (James Patrick Kelly); a Samuel Pepys pastiche (Harry Turtledove); and graveyard doings (Richard Kearns). A solid, worthwhile collection that largely avoids duplicating Gardner Dozois' ""best ofs"" (p. 596).
