THE WEEK MOM UNPLUGGED THE TVS

Steve is a hard-to-believe ten (he watches cartoons because ""I like the action"") who lives in a house with three TVs. His ""intellectual"" sister watches quiz shows, and another sister is addicted to soaps. But two days after Mom unplugs, Steve is happily at work constructing his own ""TV"" (a telescope) for watching ""nature shows"" (stars and insects). Soon his sisters join him, adding a megaphone and periscope, and sure enough, when the TV ban is lifted at the end of the week--""The reruns were OK, but I could watch reruns any time. I was after a first run."" But Phelan's story is so simplistic and her three kids so undeveloped that even a rerun has more to offer.
