A wordless picture book, the artist's first, depicts the sun as a man going about his business from horizon to horizon while the inhabitants of two farms go about theirs on the earth beneath him. The man's head is the golden orb; he's first seen sleeping beneath a sunrise-patterned counterpane, whence he arises to breakfast, dress, shed his more direct rays, encounter a summer shower and paint a rainbow, and finally retire amidst a glorious sunset. Meanwhile, the families below have been just as busy--harvesting, fishing, getting ready for a party. What makes this special is its glowing color, the precisely observed light and sky at different times of day--the whole sequence of paintings is a reminder that all light, color, and life itself are blessings from the sun. An imaginative idea come to lovely fruition.
