A first rate sports story which should please baseball enthusiasts of any age. Jim Beatty's rookie season with the New York Yankees is marred by his mother's disapproval and by his own tension over staying in the major leagues. The fights which are brought on by troublemakers almost cost him his place on the team. Jim is sustained by his close friendship with Juan Martinez, a fast young second baseman from Mexico, and by the advice of older Yankee players. The long slump that sends Jim to the minor leagues and the hard work and faith that bring him back to the Yankees in time for the pennant playoffs are part of Jim's measuring up to manhood as well as to the major leagues. Jim proves himself a stellar athlete, and a gritty young man. Boys will especially love the sizzling action on the diamond and Jim's hobnobbing with the greats of baseball. Like The Pros and The Rookie this novel shows Tex Maule at his exciting best.
