THE PRIESTHOOD

This is a new edition of one of the best known writings of St. John Chrysostom, the fourth century church father who was so renowned for his eloquence. The treatise is in dialogue form and consists of a series of conversations between St. Chrysostom and his intimate friend, Basil. He had two purposes in mind: (1) to justify an earlier decision to decline a proffered episcopacy, and (2) to extol the office of the priesthood. It is in pursuing the latter purpose that his eloquence is most effectively used. Designed for use in Catholic seminaries and admirably suited to that purpose.
