Simple conversational French and Spanish is taught beginners through these everyday expressions and vocabulary presented in each of these books. The illustrations by Kirschen drawn with humor and great zest tell the story in many cases without real need of the English translation included above each foreign sentence or word. The books are identical except for the difference in language. Third and fourth graders can benefit most if an adult with some knowledge of the language acts as a guide, largely for purposes of pronunciation. One flaw bars a hearty recommendation. There are several errors in spelling- (""Je comprends"" without the ""s"" on the jacket of one ""donde"" minus the middle ""d"" in the text of another). Though these are minor errors, and probably typographical, they cannot be completely overlooked in language books for beginners.
