PHILLIPS BROOKS: Selected Sermons

A generation ago Phillips Brooks was studied, admired and revered by all Protestant theological students and young ministers as well as by their elders who had come under the spell of the dynamic personality and brilliant preaching of this great pulpiteer. The fascinating biography of Brooks by Alexander V.G. Allen pictured the young theolog's ideal of what a minister should be. His published sermons were regarded as examples of evangelical preaching at its best. Bishop Scarlett has selected a score of sermons from the several hundred published sermons of Brooks, and has endeavored to select those that have timeless value. But the sixty years that have elapsed since Phillips Brooks held spell-bound his congregations at Philadelphia and Boston have seen such fundamental changes in the world and the problems with which religion has to deal that even these great sermons seem ""dated"". The voice of the preacher calls to us out of the dim, distant past. But, even so, every student of the art of preaching would still thrill to these masterly proclamations of the Gospel.
