EMILY DICKINSON'S LETTERS

By

Publisher: Harvard University Press

The first publication of the major part of the correspondence between Emily Dickinson and her close friends, Dr. & Mrs. Josiah Gilbert Holland. To the original 29 letters, addressed to the Hollands, which were included in the Mabel Loomis Todd Letters of Emily Dickinson (to be republished this spring- World) 60 more have been found and added, along with two letters from Lavinia Dickinson. Carefully annotated by the editor, the Hollands' granddaughter, and with an interconnecting commentary which serves as an orientation in time and incident, there is also an amplifying introduction. Once again the letters, often in the form of a poem, reveal the sympathy and tenderness of a life enclosed but a spirit that was never confined, match the qualities of her verse in their delicate responsiveness and exquisite brevity. Important in its field.
