ENDS AND MEANS IN EDUCATION

Insisting that our present system of education -- which is falling democracy- requires a fundamental reconstruction, this is an examination of old patterns of education, of the controversial issues we face today, of the new trends, closing with a design for an educational program which meets contemporary needs. The discussion here points up the limitations of progressivism, of Chicago's Hutchins' ""new reaction""; it ranges over the disputed question of federal control and its extension to parochial schools; of the affiliation of the teacher in labor organizations; of the teacher and communism; it shows the new trends toward worker's education, stimulated by the growth of trade unionism, and toward intercultural education. And to achieve an education which conforms more to the social, economic and political period through which we are moving, there is a suggested curriculum for junior colleges and colleges which will satisfy this need.
