From pencil to pen as the caricaturist writes a small serio-comedy about Wilbert Winkle, the first married selectee, and his experiences in the U.S. Army. A mouse of a man, forty odd, shy, squeamish, and no prime cut physically, Wilbert goes willingly if unprepossessingly to war. How he survives the shots at the Reception Centre, basic training at Camp Squibb, and his friend, Tinker's attempts to get him a girl. How he rises to Sergeantcy as a Motor Mechanic, is shipped to the Pacific for action, and -- much to his surprise --discovers that he is very much of a man and a fighter, winding up wounded and a hero. Very slight, almost a little wan.
