Poems in modern mood, with a certain cold and bitter intellectuality. Roethke lacks fluency, one senses a forced quality, self-consciousness, whether in serious or lighter vein. Most of the poems are sombre in thought and imagery; many deal with intangibles: many with country vistas, seasons and the like. One section includes lighter verse -- with a somewhat heavy touch.
