Roethke, well known his The making, Words for the Wind, etc. has now written a book for light verse. The first part consists of a series of brief ""nonsense"" poems, with a variable appeal. But it seems safe to say from the titles alone- ""The Yak"", ""The Gun"", etc. that these would delight children or any adult who can still think like a child. The second section is called ""The Greenhouse Poems"" and it is really charming. Roethke has always seemed at his best about a garden or a greenhouse, and these poems show a fine sense of color and observation through which graver matters are delicately transparent. The book will have drawings by Robert Lyndenfrost and should be very welcome- occasional light verse is only too seldom published in book form.
