This, one of Theodore Roosevelt's two famous works, originally appeared in four volumes. It has now been edited and abridged to a third of its original length by Professor Christopher Lasch, eliminating much of its repetition and making a rather formidable (in length) work far more approachable and readable for the modern reader. It will also have considerable reference value.
